Sunny days and spring breezes have finally arrived in Southeast Michigan! When I’m not busy selling Michigan Real Estate, my mind wanders to thoughts of fresh tomatoes and spring peas. I once entertained the idea that I could turn my yard into an abundant source of fresh produce that would provide my neighbors and my family with healthy fruits and vegetables well into the winter months. In reality, I’m a terrible gardener, so I’ll stick with helping folks buy and sell properties throughout SE Michigan.
So how do I satisfy my quest for fresh picked veggies, you ask? ( I like to assume you asked.)
Once I came to terms with my very limited agricultural talents, I quickly learned, thanks to several neighborhood elders, that Farmers Markets have all I could ask for and more!
On a recent trip to the Oakland County Farmers Market I purchased spring radishes, basil sprouts, baby kale, spring mix and a huge clump of blue oyster mushrooms. I also snagged a bag of locally made tortilla chips, handmade soap, and a lovely hanging basket of pansies. Most produce was harvested in the wee hours of the morning and was vibrant and fresh.
An added bonus of shopping at your local Farmers Market is getting to know the farmers who grew your food. They always seem happy to talk about their produce, their farms and growing practices. In conclusion, I highly recommend a trip to your local market. It’s so much more than a trip to the grocery store, and for me, far better than my many, many failed “crops”.
